With the end of Summer in sight and Fall winding its way back, now is the perfect time to be thinking about the coming season's fantastic new fashions and makeup trends.  At Youngblood, we're very excited about the introduction of two new additions to our line of luxe quality mineral cosmetics.  The first is our Pressed Individual Eye Shadow, in sixteen brilliant shades, and Poetic Lip Gloss, in a warm plum and rose shade with frost appeal.

As always, achieving that Youngblood natural, healthy glow is always in style and in this month's Radiance celebrity makeup artist, Liliana Pennington, shows you how to achieve it in a column called "Order of Makeup Application."

We're also continuing our popular new feature called "Ask The Artist," where you email us your questions about beauty and have them answered by one of our celebrity makeup artists.  Send your questions to karen@ybskin.com -- we can't wait to hear from you!

I hope you enjoy this issue of Radiance.  As always, feel free to forward it to your clients and friends.

Sincerely,

Pauline Youngblood Soli
Order of Makeup Application
by Liliana Pennington

Liliana

On a regular basis I'm asked, "What is the order of makeup application recommended by the professionals?" So, in this month's column, I'd like to give you the pro's view on the order of applying your makeup. Bare in mind, I've started and finished application in a variety of different ways and enjoy changing it up, from time to time.

My experience with fellow makeup artists varies in their likes and dislikes when it comes to this particular topic.  Many of us are rebels, who in fact, occasionally dislike order. Funny right?  My advice to you is to go with what feels the most natural. But in case you would like to learn some new tricks of the trade, read on...

Mineral rice powderBase:

Traditionally you start makeup application with the face (base). This is the way I usually begin. When a client sits in my chair, I like to start off by getting to know their needs and wants.  I also try to ask the right questions, always picking the best formula of foundation for their skin type. I first and foremost start with Youngblood's Pressed Mineral Rice Powder. Whether I'm choosing the Natural Mineral Foundation or the Youngblood Liquid Mineral Foundation, I begin by applying the Mineral Rice Powder with a Youngblood Flocked Sponge. When asked how much should be used when applying the Rice Power, it really depends upon the client's skin type. For the client with oilier skin, I recommend using a lot more Rice Powder. For those with drier skin types, they should use less Mineral Rice Powder.

After the application of Youngblood Mineral Rice Powder, it's time to apply Youngblood Liquid Mineral Foundation. Since applying your base makeup with quality Tools is "key", Youngblood makeup brushes and sponges are the perfect fit.

Spotlight Tip #1

To finish your foundation you'll need to set the makeup. Sometimes "buffing" with a Youngblood Flocked Sponge is enough, but if your skin is extremely oily, or you need a longer wearing makeup, I would suggest setting the base with Youngblood's Mineral Rice Setting Powder.

This completes the base. Now it's time to move on to contouring. There are three parts to contouring the face.  *Note* Not every client wants to apply this step, if that is the case then simply move on to Youngblood's Mineral Blush.

Mineral radianceThe first step in contouring the face is achieved through Youngblood Mineral Radiance in either Sundance or Sunshine. Or, you may choose the Coffee Natural Mineral Foundation. So you won't "streak" the darker shade, use a larger bristle brush like the Youngblood Super Powder Brush or the large Kabuki Brush. Apply this darker shade underneath the cheekbones. Starting at the base of the ears and continuing softly to the center of the face fading into the apples of the cheeks. Then sweep the rest under the jaw line. Some clients even like to apply around the temples of the forehead.

The next step is to apply Youngblood Mineral Blush. Picking a soft natural shade can be tricky. But Youngblood's blush shades work with so many skin tones, that once you've picked the perfect shade, it applies easily to the apples of the cheeks with a Youngblood Luxurious Contour Blush Brush (an easy way to get it perfectly on the apples of the cheeks is to have your client smile). Then sweep the excess blush lightly over the t-zone and neckline. This gives a nice glow to the skin.

The last step to contouring the face is the highlight. By using Youngblood Lunar Dust in Twilight, and one of the Youngblood Blush Brushes (I like to use a different one from the one you used to apply the blush), dust lightly above the cheeks and around the outer edges of the eyes. We like to call this the "backward C's" and some like to finish on the top of the nose bone. *Note* This is one of Pauline Youngblood's favorite techniques.

Lunar DustThis whole process is what I like to call "Liliana's Neapolitan Sandwich". This includes chocolate (bronzer), strawberry (blush), and vanilla (highlighter).

Eyes:

Since we've established that we like to start everything with a base, by using Youngblood's Ultimate Concealer as your base, you help pro-long the wear of your eye shadow and even out your eyelid color so Eye Shadow applies evenly and smoothly. You can also choose to use a Youngblood Eyeliner Pencil as a base to begin your eye shadow. It gives the shadow a different depth. As a general rule, it's usually best to apply some shading to the eyebrows. This will help in shaping the eyes and create even more depth. You can choose to fill in the eyebrows either before of after you've done the eye shadow. I definitely recommend Youngblood's Brow ARTISTE. In the client's best shade of course!

brow artiste*Note* A lot of makeup artists prefer to apply Eye Shadow first. The best example is when a dramatic "Smokey" eye is chosen. Then you'll want to start with the eyes before any other makeup is applied. This will minimize the "clean up" that occurs underneath the eyes because the darker shadows sometimes fall below and ruin the foundation base.

*Note* Sometimes a makeup artist chooses to wait and apply the Mascara as the very last step. We're always amazed at what a difference Mascara can make. Occasionally, you come across a client with very sensitive eyes that tend to tear upon application. You'll what to give her eyes a nice break so you won't have to deal with a watering mess.

LipstickLips:

I've seen so many application styles that it can literally go any way when it comes to applying lip color. Most commonly I've seen it done after the eyes. This way it's more apt to complement Eye Shadow shades.

But, I've actually seen makeup artists start the makeover by applying the Lipstick first.  Or they've asked a client to take a seat and try on a new lipstick shade, which generally turns into a complete makeover and a bigger sale.

I have also seen an artist change up the order of application when it comes to Lipliner vs. Lipstick. Most frequently I see the lipliner go on first to shade the outer line of the lips or as a base for the lipstick or Lip Gloss. But just recently, I saw a national artist apply the lipliner after he applied the lipstick or the lip gloss.

I think it's great however you choose to apply your makeup!  I feel that once you take hold of Youngblood's brushes or tools then you  have become a professional makeup artist and have free-range to apply your makeup any way you like!

Christine asks:

I love YB products! I have terribly blotchy skin, especially on my cheekbones.  Should I cover the blotches with something special before I apply mineral foundation?

As much as I read that mineral makeup lasts longer, it seems that I have to reapply everything in the early afternoon. Any suggestions?

Dear Christine,

Yes. You can start with Youngblood's Ultimate Concealer and spot treat those problem areas first. After that press a bit of Mineral Rice Setting Powder on top, then continue with your foundation.  Another way to go is to apply our Natural Mineral Foundation, then go back with a Concealer Brush and spot treat with Natural Mineral Foundation. As for wear, be sure to use that Mineral Rice Setting Powder as a primer on top of your foundation to make it last and last.
